Back in 1999 I used to play in a project called “Regular Size Monster” with an MC named Gentle Jones. Although we parted ways after a while, he has continued his quest of microphone prowess. He recently played a show at MOJO13 in Wilmington. I know this won’t be the last Gentle Jones post, because I have a total freakout of us playing at a firehouse from the wayback machine, and intend to post it soon… and who knows what the future will bring. Until then, enjoy Gentle Jones and his posse from 2-22-09…

Karma Canon - December 9, 2008 from Jay Caddle on Vimeo.

I was going to post the Karma Canon jam from this past Tuesday, but decided to stick with the current Brown motif.

This particular session with Richard Brown was really the lead-in to Browngasm, even though they are 3 years apart. Brown & White recorded these antics on March 13, 2005, which got Adrian and myself itching to do an all electronic recording sprawl with him.

Anyway, this is the history leading to the previous 2 posts, so please enjoy!

A couple of weeks ago on November 15th, Adrian and I took a ride out to see Richard Brown in his new digs close to Harrisburg. We brought a bunch of electronic music gear and Adrian brought his guitar. We set up a little music lab in the basement and recorded into the wee hours of the night. No multitracking at Brown’s, so this is all straight to a stereo mix. We recorded a ton… this is pretty much the first half of that evening.

Enjoy!

Yes… yet another recent Karma Canon jam! This one is from October 8, 2008. We have been quite prolific as of late… I guess that’s why we are now taking a hiatus until 2009. That’s fine… we have been rocking hard. Also the studio really needed to be retooled (paging Dr. Ian…) Looking forward to the new 2009 steee… for now, enjoy the recent past!

This recording took place on February 26,2004 at Kelly’s Logan House in Wilmington, Delaware. This was the third (and so far last) year that a show of the same name was produced by Matt Urban to benefit the Delaware Sierra Club. This was my second time performing at the Music Never Stopped, having helped organize and put together CDs for the first one (MNS Year 1: CD1, CD2, CD3).

I am not sure of every artist who participated in this because I didn’t help organize this particular year. I have the Flyer (designed by Matt Urban) which lists some of the artists. I also know some others because I reached out to various artists that I knew were excellent improv performers (Sgt. Scrapes, Jerry Lehane, Adrian Rosario, Lee Eschliman). Looking back, a big regret is not asking Richard Brown to come onstage. He was there taking pictures.

Anyway, I will add more information as I get it. I am going to email Matt Urban to try to get more info on the evening.

In the meantime… ENJOY!!!

RANDOM FREAK OF THE WEEK ON WKMJP

I think I’m gonna take a break for a little while from posting. I did 50 posts in Year 1, which was what I was hoping for.  I am going to regroup, edit down some more recent stuff, make new stuff, and figure out what I want to do in Year 2. If you have been here before, thanks for stopping by. If this is your first time here, please take a listen to any of the previous posts. Either way, there will be new stuff here starting September 1st… back to school.

- Jay

This post, albeit childish and moronic, is one of the very first times I just freaked the fuck out with other people. I am playing the lower end of the keyboards, and randomly drop in with some vocal support.  Most of the vocals are my friend Stevo, who is playing the top end of the keyboard, and Brett, with minor interjections by Barry. This scene takes place in my freshman year college dorm room in Rodney D at the University of Delaware in 1991.

This recording goes way back to 1997. I had graduated from college, realized that working for my Dad was a disaster waiting to blossom, and was planning to go to Florida to work in the adult entertainment industry. In the meanwhile, I began playing with Sgt. Scrape’s older brother, Manny Notes, and Jay Smetana (aka Phil Crazy, aka FROTHY) at Jay’s apartment in Amboy, NJ. These ditties were recorded the very first time we played together there on 2 RadioShack PZM microphones & a tape deck. Jay & Manny had played together before, so I am not sure how much of their portions of this is improv, but I would guess the majority is. Obviously all my parts are because it was the first time we jammed.

After I left for Florida, Jay & Manny continued to play together as a two-piece called “Double Meat” or 2xMHeat. In 1999, after I had moved back from Florida and into a Delaware coulesac, on the 4th of July this band name inspired a BBQ tradition… Double Meat.

Then, in 2003, a long talked about dream became reality when we filmed a video for a Double Meat song called “The Gay Truckdriver” - a story inspired by a haircut I rocked in high school, combined with my love of meat, especially sausages. The concept was formed by Manny Notes and Sgt. Scrapes, Filmed by Sgt. Scrapes, edited by Freak of the Week favorite Adrian G. Rosario, and stars your humble narrator as the Gay Truckdriver, as well as Jay Smetana as “The Drifter”. The piece became known as “A Close Shave” and you can view it below.

Sunday, March 1, 1998… hanging out in a park in Wilmington, DE freaking out with some dudes names Bryan and Mike (the other guy who plays guitar) who I barely remember… found this dusty VHS recently that Bryan had given me back then…

This session was recorded sometime in 2004 when Francis Gilbert was visiting from Chicago. Also featuring George Steinhagen (aka Richard Brown), Adrian Rosario and me.  I am not even sure of who is playing what on this stuff.
